These festive candy cones are super easy to make and all about the foil and shine! Inspired by retro Christmas candy containers, ours feature a mix of Santa scraps, holly leaves, Dresden trims, narrow velvet ribbons and fancy trims on glossy foil cones.  The crepe cuff makes filling and gifting a snap -- simply fill with small treats, gather, and tie closed --  as well as providing a guideline to follow during embellishment.  Be inspired by one of our variations in classic color combos of red, gold, green and silver, or customize completely with your favorite palette. Finished cones are about 6-1/2" to the top of the tied crepe, not counting handles.

Santa Scraps (we used S7331, S7220, S7314)

Dresden Trims (DFW852, DF8006, DFW749, DF8724, DF818, DFW782, DF7307)

Dresden Borders (DFW219 and DFW221)

Holly Leaves, Berry Stamen, Mini Poinsettias

1/8" Velvet Ribbons

Fancy Metallic Trims (OST102 and OTX-06 and OT05 and OT07), Pierced Velvet Ribbon

Clear-Drying Craft Glue (Alleene's Tacky Glue)

Scissors

Cotton Swabs

Step 1: Add Hangers

To have your candy cone double as an ornament, simply add a hanger.  Cut a 10" piece of 1/8" velvet ribbon.  Glue each end to sides of cone at the mid-way point.  Line up the ends of the ribbon with the crepe border for a clean and balanced look.  Let dry. 

Step 2: Embellish Top Edge of Cone  

It takes about 6-1/2" of trim to go around the cone with a little overlap. Glue Dresden trim, velvet ribbon or metallic trim around the top edge where crepe meets foil.  Let dry.

To make a foil holly leaf cuff: trim stems off 12 foil holly leaves (6 green, 6 silver).  Glue leaves along top of cone, alternating silver-green-silver-green.  Let dry.  The wired part of the stem that remains on the leaf backs can be bent to match the curve of the cone for a more "close to the cone" application.

Step 3: Add Holly + Berry or Poinsettia Embellishments

Twist together stems of two holly leaves.  Trim twist to about 1/4" and bend under, hiding it behind one of the leaves.  Glue in place on cone and let dry.

Twist together stems of 3 holly berry stamen.  Trim twist to about 1/8" and bend under.  Glue in place over leaves and let dry.

Cut stem of mini poinsettia about 1/8" below flower.  Glue in place over holly leaves.  Let dry.  Stem remnant can be tucked in between leaves for a central placement.

Alternatively, glue a red Dresden bow over holly leaves.  Let dry.

Step 4: Embellish Cones

Glue desired mix of Dresdens and scraps to cones.  Let dry.

Several styles are shown below in Variations: scrap directly on cone, Dresdens with no scraps, Dresden medallions + Santa scraps and Dresden + scrap + gold foil leaves.

Step 5: Ribbon Tie Closure

Fill your cone with candies or other small treats. Gather crepe and tie with an 11" piece of narrow velvet ribbon or other trim.

Tips and Notes:

-- Pierced velvet ribbons and Dresden border DFW221 look lovely around the top of the cone but don't lay flat without puckering.  We applied glue along the upper edge only and let the bottom edges hang away from the cones slightly.  The look is dimensional and interesting, and is shown above right.

-- Dresden medallions also look good curved around the cone but not glued down everywhere.  You can gently curve the medallions before glueing them down or adding scraps.

-- Customize Dresdens by cutting pieces apart: cut DFW403 in half and add a Dresden star in between, shown above center.  Glue pieces at four points around lower part of cone for added interest.

-- Take care to keep glue off foil of cones -- it will be visible.  Any excess can be swiped up with a damp cotton swab.

-- Crepe is not colorfast and will easily transfer color if moistened.  Keep completed cones out of direct sunlight to avoid fading.
